Reduce Waste with Homemade Sunscreen

One way to be more environmentally responsible is to reduce waste by reducing the use of products that come in packages. Many companies are attempting to reduce their packaging and/or use packages made from recycled products. This is great! However, as consumers, we can do even more. By making our own consumables and reusing the containers we make them in, we are not only reducing the waste we create, we are sending a message to businesses that says we don’t want all the chemicals they add to items and we won’t spend our money to support them. By making our own consumables at home, such as sunscreens and lotions, we not only do the planet a favor, but our bodies as well. So say goodbye to store bought and say hello to home made and healthy! Continue reading “Reduce Waste with Homemade Sunscreen”

Running with Knee Pain, and what to do about it!

I’m a runner, I haven’t always been one, but over the last 5 years I have learned to embrace running and the benefits I get from it.  Unfortunately for many, myself included, running can be sidelined by knee pain.  Running with knee pain ultimately dashes hopes and results in money wasted on events that cannot be participated in but for which entry fees were already paid.  There are many things you can try to heal knee pain and get back to running.

My personal journey with knee pain started about 2 years ago.  For the first several months I just ignored it.  It wouldn’t hurt while I was running, but kick in the moment I stopped.  It only lasted for a few hours afterward, so I just figured that I wasn’t stretching enough.  (which was probably true)  I ran a trail 25k (15.53 mi) pretty much untrained and that’s when it really kicked in.  After that my knees would hurt just walking around, and going up or down stairs was excruciating.  I am on the floor a fair amount for my job (I work in Special Education) and getting up was a major effort.  Finally I was convinced by a friend that I had “runner’s knee” also referred to as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome. Total Gym Home Fitness Machine Review

It is SO EASY to come up with excuses as to why not to exercise.  Having a gym or club membership can be costly, workout gear is expensive, class times aren’t convenient, I don’t have the time to drive to and from a class, it’s too cold out, it’s too hot out, it’s raining, I’m tired.  This list can go on forever!  It is much more difficult to make yourself just get to it.  When I first began attempting to get fit I was a master at excuses.  Then I saw a Total Gym Home Fitness Machine infomercial!!!!  I hadn’t had a TV for seven years and the concept of an infomercial was completely new to me.  Frankly, it spoke directly to me, I thought it addressed my every need!  I was sold, and I’ve never regretted it. Save the Planet-One Battery At A Time

How much money do you spend on batteries a year? Think about it…car batteries, batteries for remotes, hearing aids, power tools, toys, boats, flashlights, the list goes on and on.  For example, my family of 5 goes through a lot of AA batteries.  We would buy them at Sam’s Club in a pack of 48 for jsut under $20, that’s about .42 per battery.  We go through those easily within a month, (5 Wii remotes, 2 TV remotes, various toys, and electronics)  That’s $240 per year just on AAs!!!  Plus, in many areas, once they’ve died you have to pay by the pound to recycle them.  An average AA battery weighs 7/8 of an ounce.  In my town it costs .56/lb to recycle them, so about 16 batteries can be recycled for .56.  That package of 48 now costs me another 1.68, bringing the actual cost of each battery to 45.5 cents each.  Think about that every time you replace one!    A lot of people choose to skip the recycling and toss them into the garbage which is costly in its own way to everyone and the planet.   According to the Environmental Protection Agency approximately 180,000 TONS of batteries are thrown into landfills each year!!  It takes about 100 years for those batteries to completely break down.  What an environmental nightmare!  Once those batteries are in a landfill their casings degrade or are damaged and toxins like mercury and lead are released into our soil.  Although battery manufacturer’s have made strides in rectifying this, just the fact that all those batteries are taking up landfill space unnecessarily is bad enough!

WHAT CAN I DO WITH DEAD BATTERIES?

Most people are unaware that there is a way to recondition every one of those batteries to be as good as new.  And it’s simple!  Just imagine how convenient it would be to be able to easily recondition any battery in your home.  No running to the store for AAA when the remote dies, or shelling out $100 or more for a new car battery.  Continue reading “Save the Planet-One Battery At A Time”

How to use Essential Oils for Vertigo

If you or a loved one suffer from vertigo you know what an inconvenience it can be!  Life pretty much stops in milder cases, and in severe cases hospitalization may be necessary.  Using essential oils for vertigo is a safe effective alternative to over the counter or prescription medications.  Any they may take effect more quickly as well!

WHAT ESSENTIAL OILS SHOULD I USE AGAINST VERTIGO?

There are a number of essential oils that can be used to treat vertigo.  When creating a blend for a particular individual I recommend having them sniff the oil to see if it agrees with them.  Some people have a natural aversion to certain scents.  Inadvertently adding them to a blend will discourage the individual from using it. (That’s why I recommend creating your own blends for your family rather than purchasing the pre-made blends that are widely available)
